Imprimis opens year with win in the Janus Stakes

One of the leading fancies for last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1), Imprimis lost all opportunity when meeting with interference in the stretch.

Running for the first time since then, Imprimis faced Extravagant Kid – beaten just a length in that same Breeders’ Cup event – in the five furlong Janus Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Bumped at the start, Imprimis raced nearly five lengths off the pace, as the opening quarter went in :21.09. Imprimis moved closer as a half passed in :22.13, but was still 3 1/4 lengths off the pace as the field hit the stretch. Switching leads, Imprimis delivered a furious closing surge to hit the wire a neck ahead of Extravagant Kid.
